He explained data privacy and foreign interference in elections were topics that they have discussed at the Facebook board meeting.
“These are some of the biggest issues that the company has faced, and we feel a huge responsibility to get these right,” Zuckerberg informed the US the lawmakers throughout the Congressional hearing, including that “that is among my top priorities in 2018”.
“2018 is is a remarkably important year for elections.
Zuckerberg started his inaugural hearing because his firm faces charges of failing to prevent Cambridge Analytica, the data-mining firm affiliated with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, by collecting personal information from over 80 million consumers to attempt to influence election.
Zuckerberg stated his one of the greatest regrets was that Facebook has been slow in identifying the Russian information surgeries in 2016.
“We expected them to perform lots of traditional cyber attacks, which we did identify and notify the campaigns that they were trying to hack into them,” he said.
The Facebook CEO stated he was now more confident as his company has set the things right. Considering that the 2016 election, there have been several important elections round the world where it has had a better record, ” he said.
That was also the French presidential election. There was the German election. There was also the US Senate Alabama particular election this past year,” Zuckerberg added.
He explained Facebook has deployed new Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools that better identify fake accounts, trying to interfere with elections or distribute misinformation.
“Between the three elections, we had the ability to eliminate tens of thousands of reports until they could do major damage,” he said.
“And the nature of these attacks, though, is that there are individuals in Russia whose occupation is to try to exploit our systems along with other Internet systems, along with other systems, too. This is an arms race? I mean, they’re going to continue getting better in this, and we will need to invest in keeping on becoming better in this, also, which is why one of things I mentioned previously is we are going to have more than 20,000 people, from the end of the calendar year, working on security and content review throughout the business,” he said.
Zuckerberg said they’ve developed tools that identify individuals when they try to create fake accounts.
Your content has to be authentic. We construct technical tools to attempt and identify when people are creating bogus reports, especially huge networks of fake accounts, such as the Russians have in order to eliminate all this content,” he explained.
“What we are likely to do is to ask a legal government individuality and we are likely to verify the location. We’re going to do that so that someone sitting in Russia, for example, couldn’t state they’re in America and, consequently, able to conduct an election ad,” he said.
